ration was obvious, the Olympics were near and China would be on full display to the world. However, my thoughts went to the last time where Tiananmen Square was on full display to the world and it was in June of 1989 when Chinese students who were protesting their oppressive government were massacred by the very government that they were there to protest. Since that time, while China has not displayed their atrocities against humanity for the world to see, they have routinely and without conscience been at the forefront of disregard for humanity or the rights of their citizens.
This record that China boasts is not news to the world at large, neither is the damage to the environment, yet on August 8th, we will celebrate the opening of the games, and the Chinese government will put on their best face, smile and welcome the world to their doorstep. All the while trying to keep their abuse and oppression behind the curtain in hopes nobody notices.
The Olympics is a great event and one that we can all enjoy, but as you watch, think about the people of China, their need and what they face on a daily basis. No freedom of religion, no freedom of speech, limits on children, imprisonment without trial (The United States is guilty of the same thing), the beating and murder of dissidents and the list goes on.
My hope and prayer is that as the curtain is pulled back and the games open, that the world will see a wonderful people who need to be free of the bonds of their governments oppressive and inhumane ways. I pray that the Western World, led by the United States would use this as an opportunity to call upon China to act morally and ethically in the treatment of their people and the environment. I pray for the people of China as well that they would know peace and and understanding of the freedom of Jesus Christ, despite their harsh government. I ask that you pray along with me.
