Amazement

I am amazed by what I saw last night and see today.  I am not talking about the historic events that occurred last night in our country, which are indeed amazing. I am talking about some of the shameful and saddening behavior I have seen and continue to see from my Christian brothers and sisters leading up to this event and now in the wake of it.

By the sounds of things coming from those in the American church we ought to pack up our tents and call it quits because Barack Obama is now our new President.  I have seen, heard and read some incredible things leading up to the election. Such as the following:

the reckless and irresponsible Letter from 2012 in Obama's America by James Dobson's Focus on the Family

denials by many believers of Obama's claim of faith in Jesus Christ

labels and character smears against the then candidate by his own brothers in Christ who supported John McCain

Now, not even 24 hours after the election, I have heard and read things from Christians like:

"God Help us" (I guess we did not need to pray this before?)

"We are doomed"

"America what were you thinking this is such a disappointment"

"We elected this idiot now we will pay for this"

"We are mourning the death of our country"

Why does all of this amaze me?  Because by the sights and sounds of it we as a body of believers have forgotten

who we serve

who the real enemy is

where are hope is

that we should be working more towards the Kingdom of God not the Kingdom of America

Jesus does not belong to a political party.  He has his own agenda and His own Kingdom and no matter who was elected last night, He is still on His throne and our hope is in that and that alone.

Yet, I see so many people who claim Jesus as Lord acting defeated, hopeless and sad to say hateful because of this election.

What is needed is a call to repentance and making our calling a priority.  To love, to serve, to be a light of the truth, love and saving grace of Jesus to a lost and dying world.  Measuring the actions and the words I have seen by so many believers in the past months, we have strayed far from that

Paul in his letter to the Galatians said: "I am amazed that you are so quickly deserting Him who called you by the grace of Christ, for a different gospel"    God help us is right  . . . . for our Gospel is not the government or a specific party and may we stop chasing it as if it is.

Bumper,
I totally feel you on this one. I did not vote for Obama, but I agree the total lack of respect, and the "impending doom" being preached by those who call themselves christians...I have a very hard time with. God is my ultimate hope and faith at the end of the day. My strength lies in Him, regardless of who is in office. That's why I posted this, and received many thank yous from christians and non christians, Democrats and Republicans.

"Regardless who I personally wanted for President, I am a big enough person to appreciate what is happening.
My heart warms at the thought of so many African Americans who struggled, and fought for their civil rights, who heard the words of Dr. King and his message of peace and never gave up hope.
My heart warms for those in bi-racial relationships, and children from bi-rational or multi ethnic backgrounds, who struggle so much against discrimintation today. I feel they might have a certain peace in their heart. A peace that says, it's not longer about race and our nation just proved it.
I am PROUD of my country.
Let me say it again. I am PROUD of my country.
Just because I might disagree with with some of the policies Obama presented, does not mean I can't appreciate what a monumental day this will be in history. We have been priviledged to see history, great history, unfold right before us, and I am not so deep into my personal views that I can't respect and savor what we, the United States, have proved to the world.
I hope we move forward. I HOPE that the past can be overcome. I hope people will really see and believe in their hearts that prejudice and hate, against anyone, any color, race, religion, or sex, is wrong and counterproductive to the greater good.
I do not have tunnel vision. I can see all sides of the situation. I choose to see the good.
President elect Obama asked us that did not vote for him to give him a chance. I can do that. I will do that. I hope he delivers. Because at the end of the day, America is broken. We are a broken and bleeding nation divided by so much hate and turmoil and seperation, not just by race, but also seperated by our paychecks, our education level, our own world view. I really hope and pray, that the next 4 years are going to be everything people expect. I will pray for President Elect Obama. That is my duty as a christian. He has a mighty and dificult task before him."
